A Message from the Principal

This is the annual School Accountability Report Card, established by the passage of Proposition 98 by California voters in 1988. The purpose of this report card is to inform parents and other interested people about the progress of our school. We hope it will be a way to work together with the community to continue improving our school system in its pursuit of excellence.

As you review this report, the information may need further explanation or you may have ideas for improving our program. Please share your suggestions or concerns with us. The more we communicate the more the children will benefit.

School Description

The Lagunita School District was established in 1897. The original school was moved to the Boronda Adobe Historical Site and restored by the Historical Society in 1985. The present building, designed by Belli and Christensen, Architects reflects the feeling and character of the original school as it was built to its specifications. Now connected to the library by a small hall is a large room, 30' by 60', which can be used as one large room or two separate classrooms, one for 3-5 and the other for 6-8 grades. A portable classroom houses K-2 and a second portable classroom contains the Preschool. Lagunita School District is a one-school, school district.

Our certificated staff consists of a teacher/principal for Kindergarten-1st-2nd grade, a 3rd-4th-5th grade teacher, and a teacher for 6th-7th-8th grade. We also have the services of a certificated resource teacher two days per week, three full-time instructional aides, a secretary, a bus driver, and two part-time custodians. The preschool is staffed by a director. We have the services of a psychologist (2 days a year), a speech therapist who works with our children on a weekly basis, a nurse for vision and scoliosis screening and Family Life classes, and an audiologist for hearing screening, who are all provided by contract with MCOE. We are also fortunate in having parent volunteers and a parent-teacher club who help in a myriad of activities.

Lagunita has an active School Board and School Site Council. Every parent is involved in school activities in one way or another. The children also participate in Student Body meetings regularly. They are active in numerous fund raisers throughout the year.

Student Academic Achievement

The Lagunita School District gives STAR tests to all students in 2nd through 8th grades in the spring. This national norm referenced test gives individual student results in reading, language, math, science and social studies. These scores are used to help compare each student's yearly performance. The scores become part of their permanent records. Parents receive individualized printouts of their children's scores. Our student's scores average above the national norm.

Student Attendance

Our school enrollment averaged 55 children this year. Twenty five of our children live in district. The rest are on interdistrict transfers. Parents desiring the education and atmosphere a 'one room schoolhouse' affords have opted to transfer their children to Lagunita.

The school promotes attendance through calls to parents of absent children and conferences when necessary. Attendance awards are presented quarterly.

Teacher Evaluation

Teachers are evaluated twice annually according to a process approved by the Lagunita School Board in order to promote quality instruction for our children.

Discipline and Climate for Learning

The atmosphere at Lagunita is friendly and caring. The family-like atmosphere encourages academic and social growth. Children are taught the rules and held accountable for following them. Academic achievement and good citizenship are recognized and awarded every month. Goals of the Peacebuilder Program are fostered here.

Unacceptable behavior is dealt with by conferencing with parents to resolve the problem. In serious instances, as described by state law, the student will be suspended from school.

Training and Curriculum Development

The Lagunita School Board provides the funds for the staff to participate in professional growth conferences and workshops throughout the year. These courses are offered by MCOE, professional associations and businesses.
