The John Steinbeck House
This is the home where John Steinbeck grew up.
| John Steinbeck was born in 1902. My class went to John Steinbeck's home. The first room we went in was the room that John Steinbeck was born in. That room was his mom and dad's room. It had two couches and two chairs. The lady that talked to us was Mrs. Hogan. |
| Kitchen Door | John Steinbeck went to a school named Roosevelt School. He did well in school, but he didn't try hard. His mother wanted him to read every day. When he was about 15 he knew he wanted to write. He wrote lots of stories, but he never put his name on his stories when he sent them to magazines, so they never were published. He went to Salinas High School and Stanford University. |

| John's Bedroom | John Steinbeck had three sisters. Their names were Mary, Beth and Esther. The two bigger sisters tried to boss John around. Thanks to that he always looked for mischief. The little sister, Mary and John really liked each other. When they were older the girls were always in the bathroom, so his father put in an extra sink and mirror. You can see the sink in this picture. As a boy he had a big room with a big picture. There was a small door by his bedroom and it was for dirty laundry. The chute went down to the basement. |

| Livingroom | John's father worked for a flour company. They moved from King City to Salinas where his father kept working for a flour company. John and Mary had a pony. He loved the pony a lot. Much later when his mother was sick he took care of her. He started to think about when he was little and about the pony he had. Then he wrote the book The Red Pony. He became very famous for lots of books he wrote. Some of his books were made into movies. He will always be famous. |
