Lagunita School
|
100 years ago Lagunita School opened. Lagunita means little lake. Lagunita got its name because around the corner there is a little lake. When the kids went to school they rode horses . Steven's grandmother rode a cow to school. They closed Lagunita in 1967 because it didn't meet the earthquake code. The students went to a portable school right near where the old school had been. They moved the old Lagunita to the Boronda Adobe area.

There is a little school called Lagunita. A long time ago the kids rode their horses to school. They had bathrooms outside. The boys had to get wood. In the mornings the teacher would heat up the room with a wood burning stove. If they had an earthquake they were afraid the children would be hurt, so then the school closed and they used a portable until a new school was built.

Lagunita got its name because it means Little Lake in Spanish. Before cars people rode horses or people like Steven's grandma had a better idea. She rode on her cow to school. They closed the old school in 1967 because it was not earthquake safe. Children had to go to school in the portable that is now Miss Cathy's preschool, named Sugarloaf. The new school opened in 1987. The old school was moved to the Boronda Adobe Historical Area. The old school was only the size of the library in the new school. They had only 8 to 15 children. They tried to make the new school look like it did back then. Now Lagunita has an office, library, two classrooms and a hall. The school has lots of memories in it. By Brittany |
