The Harvey-Baker House

Isaac J. Harvey's house was built in 1868. The builder was B.F. Wilcoxen. Mr. I. J. Harvey was the first mayor of Salinas. Isaac was married to Sara Mellet. They had a son and two daughters. The son's name was A.B. Harvey. After Sara died, Isaac lived with his daughter and her family, the Bakers, in this house. Isaac started to get old and he moved into the front bedroom so his daughter could take care of him. When Isaac died his daughter and her family continued to live there. Isaac's granddaughter lived there for a while until she went to live in a retirement home. Her name was Florence M. Baker. She left the house to the Historical Society in 1968.

The Kindergarten - 3rd Grade Class went to the Harvey House. It has been moved three times. It use to be at 238 East Romie Lane.

The Cookhouse

The cookhouse was 10 feet away from the house. If the kitchen burnt it would not burn the whole house.

In the Harvey house after dinner the ladies would go in the front parlor and the men in the back parlor. They would shut the doors so not to bother each other's company.

They had a baker's table. It is a table that you can make into a big table. You can put flour in it. They used to make bread on it.

This piano was one of the Harvey family's favorite things. When Mr. Harvey had it shipped to them it was brought by ship and was left on the beach until Mr. Harvey could send a wagon to pick it up.

I like Mrs.Haynes, the lady who showed us around, a lot!

The family room had a lot of decorations and very old books.

There were three secretaries, or desks, there.
